What You Bring
You are a recent graduate with a strong interest in backend development and a desire to grow into a professional software engineer. You have:
- A completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Some experience with a JVM language such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala
- A basic understanding of RESTful APIs and microservices
- Familiarity with Git and CI/CD workflows
- Exposure to relational databases such as MySQL and an interest in NoSQL technologies like Cassandra
- Curiosity about cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP
- An interest in Agile ways of working
- Strong communication skills and a proactive learning attitude
Bonus skills:
- Experience with Kafka, Elasticsearch, RabbitMQ, or Terraform
- Familiarity with observability tools
- Basic knowledge of Node.js

What You’ll Do
As a Backend Developer in this graduate program, you will:
- Design, build, and maintain backend services using Java, Kotlin, or Scala
- Develop and optimize REST APIs that support millions of users
- Work on event-driven systems using tools like Kafka
- Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines for reliable deployments
- Run and monitor services in cloud environments such as AWS or GCP
- Work with both relational and NoSQL databases
- Collaborate closely with frontend, mobile, and data teams

Program Structure
You will be employed by Codehive and work full-time as part of one of the backend engineering teams at our partner company Marktplaats. Throughout the year, you will gain hands-on experience on real systems, receive mentoring from senior engineers, and follow a tailored learning plan focused on backend development, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps practices. After the program, you may transition into a full-time role at Marktplaats.
